Information Supplied By The Owner

5, Fireman’s Row, Sutton in Ashfield NG17 1AF

A few notes on the property and its history:

Fireman’s Row, as the name suggests, was built for the firemen who were employed to use the first fire “engine” in Sutton in Ashfield. (Prior to this the fire appliance was horse drawn). My grandfather was the first engine driver and, as such, was given first choice as to which house he wanted. He chose number 5 as it was his lucky number.

In 1922 the Duke of Portland and the Sutton in Ashfield Urban District Council gave permission for the houses to be built and our family moved into the house as soon as it was completed in 1926 . My two Aunts were approx 2 and 1 years old when they moved in with Dad born in the house 2 years later and the family have lived there ever since.

During the war most people turned their gardens into allotments to grow their own food. My grandfather loved flowers so, to the disgust of my Grandmother, he grew flowers.

There have been lots of changes over the almost 100 years of occupation. The area behind the house (now occupied by bungalows and flats) was the Council yard where my grandfather worked. In front of the property was a field known as the croft adjacent to a small farm ( which was converted to an abattoir, not so nice !) until that was converted into a small development of bungalows.

The house was initially council owned with gas lamps to illuminate not only the street but also the rooms in the house, an open coal fire in the kitchen and a coal house at the rear of the property.

In the 1970’s the house was refurbished by A.D.C. And the coal fire was replaced by gas central heating and all oil lamps and their infrastructure were removed.

In 1982 the house was purchased by my grandmother and Aunt from A.D.C.

The property has always been a well loved, welcoming family home.
